Chiang Kai-shek has asked me through Consul-General Hankow

to ascertain what would be the attitude of His Majesty's Government

if the Japanese cut the Canton-Kowlon railway.

I suggest that it would be as well to notify the Japanese

Government formally of our interest in the line adding that we

shall look to them to make good any damage caused to those

interests by Japanese action. I do not see what more we can do.
